GC and GC-MS Application System
Pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) is a powerful technique for characterizing a wide range of materials, including those that are insoluble, complex, or present at trace levels. Often requiring little to no sample preparation, it is particularly effective for analyzing substances such as polymers, microplastics, rubber, paints, dyes, resins, coatings, cellulose, wood, textiles, and oils. By applying heat to break down samples, Py-GC/MS enables the analysis of compounds that are otherwise unsuitable for conventional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
By heating the sample mixture to the point of thermal degradation, the now smaller molecules can be separated by gas chromatography (GC) and identified by mass spectrometry (MS). While it cannot detect certain inorganic substances, this chemical analysis technique offers highly sensitive qualitative and quantitative data that makes Py-GCMS instruments incredibly useful to various industries and applications, including environmental analysis and forensic science. /p>

Webinar - Applications of Py-GC/MS in the Tire Industry
Passenger and commercial vehicle tires are a complex materials technology that may include ten or more distinct layered rubber compounds each formulated to provide different physical and chemical properties based on application and end use. These compounds are engineered to meet specific metrics related to weight, rolling resistance, and wet traction so as to comply with strict fuel economy and road safety regulations. Therefore, information obtained for the purposes of reverse engineering and materials analysis is of great value to tire chemists especially in the case of failure
investigation.

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) is an innovative analytical technique ideal for characterizing microplastic particles. Unlike traditional methods, which require extensive sample preparation, PY-GC allows for the direct thermal decomposition of complex polymers, producing gas-phase products that can be identified by gas chromatography. This technique offers unparalleled accuracy and efficiency when paired with Frontier’s total solution for microplastics analysis.
